Plato once said, “The beginning is the most important part of the work.” Most of us can probably relate to this right now as we strive to maintain our commitment to our New Year’s resolutions. It’s often true in digital marketing as businesses begin their first initiatives, too. While my digital marketing tree makes it easy to see which channels to kick off at which stages, a little prep work streamlines the process and boosts success. If you know someone planning to get serious about their digital marketing this year, please share this with them.
1. Lay the Foundation First
Foundational activities, such as creating personas, a brand guide, and goals, help brands focus their efforts and improve results.
2. Know the Priorities
The digital marketing tree takes the guesswork out of deciding which channels to leverage, but brands still have decisions to make within each channel. For instance, those starting with email marketing must know which types of emails they want to send and at what cadence, plus plan for administrative concerns such as list hygiene that can impact deliverability.
3. Get the Right People in Place
Nearly half of all small business owners handle all their marketing entirely on their own. This is concerning because the owner’s strategic vision and leadership are best applied to core areas of the business, and marketing performs better when handled by experts. Decide which roles need to be filled and whether they’ll be outsourced or kept in-house, and create a timeline.
4. Equip the Team for Success
Customer relationship management (CRM) software, a project management tool, an analytics program, a content marketing calendar, and marketing automation tools will all be necessary. Invest in them early to receive maximum benefit.
5. Remain Agile
The world of digital marketing is constantly evolving. Digital marketing strategies must evolve with it.
