Let me start off by saying we ended up completing this trick two years ago. After many film errors and 343 updating the game, we could never get a complete film of the trick past our first completion. That killed motivation to film the video along with life getting busy. After years Hybrid started developing a dope camera tool for us to use. I then wanted to hold off making the video until Hybrid could get the tool into a good working state. So, all that delayed the video by two years. I’m happy to finally have it done and edited. Normally with large tricks like this I push out the video within the month of completion. This one was a totally different story. It’s great to see it finished but unfortunately one of our members, Trombonerist, is no longer with us to see the final video. He helped an extreme amount with this video and trick towards the end as we closed in on the completion. We release this video on the 1 year anniversary of his passing. We miss you everyday Nick. Wish you were still with us.
The Space Room is the area used for beginning cutscene room at the beginning of the mission The Ark. For 15ish years we as a tricking group thought it would be near impossible to get to this area.
If the player continues forward in the level more than a couple feet the room deloads permanently. This means we literally have no supplies to get to the room. We tried many ideas to bypass the deload trigger all to no avail. We tried revert grabbing equipment like a Deployable Cover to attempt to clip into the room. We were successful with this setup and plan only to find out we can’t clip straight downwards with a DC. We tried crashing the pelican we ride in on to fall below the map before it flies off.
One thing we did know was if we could get out of the map early before hitting the deload it could allow for more possibilities to open up. We were able to get out of the map early with our revert grabbing of a DC but that wasted checkpoints although this did allow us to experiment with new ideas. We want to use the sniper pod. We wanted to drop it from a tall height and while riding the turret clip under the map with extreme speed like the banshee drop method we’ve used in the past. Unfortunately the area didn’t have a tall enough ceiling to gain enough speed to clip.
We hit a dead end here after a while. It wasn’t until we were randomly playing the level and one of our players got stuck in the pelican at the start of the mission. After the player was stuck in the riding seat, the pelican flew out side the map and the player could safely be out of the map without using any resources. We needed to figure out how this randomly happened. After much testing, late nights and eating cookies we figured it out.
Getting out of the map without using checkpoints or DCs allowed even more flexibility for us. The plan then came together. Our plan was to use the phantom to clip under the map, but that would require a lot of boxes and materials to work. We collected everything we could boxes, the sniper pod, the banshees, basically anything that we could move we used. The tricky part was we needed to collect all this stuff without ever getting close to the level. The final question became well how do we get the phantom to load without reloading the cutscene?
With more research we found we can DC clip through the inside of the level to trigger loads to load the phantoms without deloading the room. This was a very hard clip to perform. From there we just had to crash the phantom using the old school trick by meleeing the pilot out of the phantom. Finally we could setup the final clip into the room without ever stepping foot inside the map.
