1. D. H. Lehmer announced that 2^n - 1 for n = 2203 and 2281are Mersenne primes. He was aided by a SWAC computer, with the first result taking 59 minutes. SWAC had been built in 1950 in Los Angeles.
2. Jacques Hadamard died in Paris. He proved the PrimeNumber Theorem in 1896 and made many other contributions to analytic number theory, complex analysis, and other areas.
3. Gerard Debreu won a Nobel Prize for his work in mathematical economics. He held a joint appointment in Mathematics and Economics at the University of California, Berkeley.
