A Tale of Pi (Part 2)
This video is the second in the series "A Tale of Pi" which explores the most celebrated constant in the history of mathematics. The purpose of the series is to give a historical account of the discovery of Pi along with the progress made in its computation with time and how frequently Pi occurs in mathematics.
The first video of the series discussed the brilliance of Archimedes and the failure of Greeks to decide whether Pi is rational or irrational. We also gtt to know about the gigantic number of digits of Pi that has been calculated using modern softwares.
In this video we saw how the end of Roman civilization affected the progress in computation of Pi and how the modern mathematician took advantage of genuis of Greeks and combined it with the new decimal number system to make significant progress.
The script of this video is from the book "The Lore of Large Numbers" by Philip J. Davis.
I could not find the previous animation of approximating Pi by approximating the contour of the circle by polygons I created so I had to use it's poor version. I hope to correct that in next video.
