The open sea is much safer than the bars of any estuary. Strong currents and varying depths make estuaries quite dangerous.
Before going to a new location, ask someone who knows the area.
Never go alone; the presence of other boats is a great help.
Never go sailing on days when the wind is against the current, as it causes dangerous static waves for any vessel.
