The Invisible Man Returns was the first of four sequels to director James Whales’ 1933 classic Universal horror inspired by HG Wells’ original story. It was released in the US on 12 January 1940 and re-released on 1 December 1947.
Being invisible throughout, except in the film’s final sequence, 29-year-old Vincent Price had to use just his voice to maintain a sense of sympathy for his character whose mental state is rapidly deteriorating after being injected with the invisibility serum. And that voice would soon become as iconic as Price himself.
