When Bad Faith Discourse Prevents Productive Analysis of Taylor's Art
I think a lot of fans are holding Taylor Swift back. By which I mean, they’re looking for the basest, most surface level of potential “meaning” that they can “confirm” with evidence from the tabloids, and once they find that, they shut down anyone who believes there is an alternate or deeper or second layer of meaning. And often they do so in a very hostile manner, which discourages others from exploring the deeper layers of meaning or from sharing those layers of meaning.
As someone who has been a professional writer, has taken a lot of college level writing courses in my film degree, and who has obsessively studied Taylor’s work for years now, I’m here to tell you, if you think any recent song or lyric or symbol only has one meaning and that meaning is the correct one, you’re very likely absolutely wrong. And not only are you wrong, you’re discrediting Taylor and holding her back in the process.
