Fire Classes
Class A
Materials that Burn on the surface and in depth.
Example: Wood, paper, and fabric.
It is characterized by ash and embers, which they leave as residue.
Class B
The materials are flammable and burn on the surface.
Example: Gasoline, kerosene, gas, alcohol, among others.
It is characterized by not leaving residue.
Class C
The materials involved in the fire are energized electrical and electronic equipment.
Example: Computers, lamps, and televisions.
It is characterized by the conduction of energy and the risk to life it poses to firefighters.
Class D
The materials are pyrophoric metals and require specific extinguishing agents.
Example: Zinc, sodium, magnesium, lithium, and cadmium powder.
It is characterized by burning at high temperatures and by reacting with common extinguishing agents, especially those containing water, which should not be used.
Now that we know what fire is, how it differs from fire, and the classes of fire, we will look at some methods for extinguishing them.
Smothering:
This involves removing or reducing the oxygen content at the combustion site. It is the most effective method for fighting Class B fires. Smothering involves using a blanket or other object to smother the combustion. Foam extinguishers are the most recommended method. This removes the oxidizer, in this case, oxygen, and consequently extinguishes the fire.
In the case of very hot liquids, subsequent cooling is necessary to prevent re-ignition.
Isolation:
This method involves separating the fuel from the combustion process to prevent the fire from spreading to other unaffected areas. Ensure there is no risk of explosion or ignition before removing the non-burning fuel.
Cooling:
This involves reducing the temperature of the area affected by the flames, thus preventing the burning material from reaching its flash point. The flash point is the lowest temperature at which a heated object ignites in the presence of an external flame. When we throw water on a fire, we are cooling it, that is, removing the heat component and eliminating the igneous agent, as we no longer have the ignition temperature necessary for the chain reaction that keeps the fire alive.
