This element was named after the city of Berkeley – home to the University of California – where this artificial element was discovered. It was first synthesized by Glenn T Seaborg. Berkelium has no uses other than the creation of heavier elements, such as Tennessee.
Seaborg helped develop the atom bomb, but opposed using it in World War II.
The first particle accelerators were built in the University of California, in the town of Berkeley, USA. It was here that this metal was first created, so it was named after the town. Scientists made berkelium by smashing atoms of helium and americium together. This element is used only to make even heavier elements.
