Argon is the third most abundant gas in the atmosphere, after nitrogen and oxygen.
About 1 per cent of Earth’s atmosphere is made up of argon, the most common noble gas on Earth.
Argon was named after the Greek word Argos, meaning “idle”; because early chemists were left with it after removing all other gases from air, and they found it did not do anything at all.
Pure argon in a glass sphere: This sample of argon is trapped in a glass sphere, and gives off a pale purple colour when electrified.
Argon-filled suit: Some diving suits are inflated with argon to retain heat in cold water.
Metal welding: Argon in this flame prevents metals from reacting with oxygen during hot welding.
WINDOWS: Argon is a poor conductor of heat and is used to fill the gaps between panes in double-glazed windows.
Double-glazed window: The space between the glass panes is filled with argon to slow the loss of heat.
BULBS: Argon is often used as the inert gas in filament light bulbs it’s also found in newer low-energy bulbs.
PRESERVATION: Argon is used in museum displays to protect delicate exhibits. Historical documents are stored in sealed containers filled with argon to stop degradation by oxygen.
Argon-filled display: The Magna Carta, a historical document, is stored in argon, which forces out oxygen and water vapour that would damage the parchment.
