The name of this gas means the “new one”.
Tiny amounts of the element were locked in Earth’s rocks when the planet formed, are released in volcanic eruptions and end up in the air.
Neon makes up around one thousandth of 1 per cent of the atmosphere.
Pure neon, a transparent gas, is extracted by cooling air to a temperature of −189.34°C (−308.81°F), at which point the neon gas in the air turns to liquid.
Pure neon in a glass sphere This sample of neon is trapped in a glass sphere, and gives off a red-orange glow when electrified.
INERT: Neon is the most inert element in the periodic table, with no known stable compounds.
Neon sign Glass tubes filled with neon are used as brightly lit signs, which glow with a distinctive reddish orange colour. It is most commonly used in lighting, such as in illuminated signs or as bright warning beacons in the path of aircraft at airports.
Helium-neon laser A deep red beam is emitted by this laser. Neon can be mixed with helium to create research lasers.
REFRIGERANT: Liquid neon is a powerful refrigerant, with forty times the cooling power per unit volume of liquid helium.
