Sometime in 1943 Mary Jane Vangilder, in order to escape a failed and possibly abusive marriage, left her home near Fairmont, West Virginia and moved to Plymouth, Ohio. Mary Jane hoped to not only improve her life and that of her 5 children but also to help the war effort. To that end she took a job at a newly opened Army Air Force Supply Depot in nearby Shelby, Ohio. Mary kept in touch with her eldest daughter, Anna, and began sending money, clothing and even War Bonds to them.
In February of 1945 Mary Jane formally filed for a divorce from her husband, James Wesley Vangilder. The following month she quit her job at the Air Force Depot. Back in West Virginia Mary Jane's husband also filed for divorce. His petition was granted on November 26th 1945. On April 4th 1946 Mary Jane withdrew her own divorce petition. The record of this dismissal would become the last, written record of Mary Jane Vangilder's existence. She has never been heard from or seen since.
