REGULAR MALLET vs. DEAD BLOW MALLET
#Shorts
What is the difference between a dead blow and a regular mallet. All the difference in the world. This short eleven second clip clearly demonstrates what the difference is. With a regular mallet part of the force is distributed into the board and some of the force is returned into the mallet causing it to bounce. (Incidentally, the same is happening between the board and the bench, causing the board to bounce up as well). But, with the dead blow mallet, the when the mallet hits the board and begins to rebound, the hundreds of BBs that are loose inside the mallet head, force the mallet back into the board causing it to be driven into the board and not bounce back. The result is that the force of the blow is driven into the board. If you have never seen a dead blow mallet in action, it is quite a sight to behold.
This dead blow mallet was made from a mallet that I had originally made 30 years ago. I replaced it earlier this week when I made three new mallets: a small, a medium and a large mallet. I decided not to discard my old mallet but to try up-cycling it into a dead blow mallet.
