Aerobee was a hybrid Army-Navy rocket, designed for high-altitude research made by the Aerojet Engineering Corp. Once called the "Workhorse of the Upper Atmosphere" the Aerobee family of sounding rockets were used to probe outer space. After a test with a dummy Aerobee stage at White Sands Missile Range in September 1968, the first all-up Aerobee 170 flight succeeded on 26 October that year. A total of 138 Aerobee 170's were launched until 1983.
This rocket is an upgraded Aerobee 150A, the small booster was replaced by a Nike booster. Aerobee 170 and 170A variants, both apparently used the four-finned Aerobee 150A as second stage. This research rocket was capable of carrying a 250 pound payload to an altitude of 165 miles. It was capable of carrying as many as six experiments at one time.
