What an amazing opportunity I had to observe these three great horned owl fledgling chicks for well over an hour and a half! Mama owl was resting on a branch nearby. I will post a video of her in the near future. For the most part, the four of them were having their daytime rest, with the chicks occasionally taking interest in one thing or another.

Great horned owls (Bubo virginianus) are crepuscular, preferring to hunt at dusk and dawn. However, they will hunt during the night, and even during the day, if the opportunity for a meal arises. On the adults, the "horns" on their heads are neither horns nor ears. They are tufts of feathers called plumicorns.

Great horned owls are one of the most common owls in North America, finding habitat from desert to rainforest, and from tundra to cities. They are fierce predators, able to take down large prey, including other owls and various raptors. Their relatively poor sense of smell even allows them to hunt skunks! I was amazed by the size of their feet. When clenched, their talons require a force of 28 pounds to open. This grip is often fatal to their prey.

Babies are ready to fly from 10-12 weeks old.
