Snowy Owl Turns its Head More Than 180 Degrees!
A snowy owl (Bubo scandiacus) turns its head backwards, but then goes quite a bit beyond that! The big head turn is at 0:38. Snowy owls breed in the high arctic in the open tundra plains. During the winters, many will migrate south to northern Eurasia and North America. Here they perch on the ground or on short posts and other manmade objects near lakes, oceans, and agricultural land. From their perches they watch for prey, feeding on small rodents, rabbits, birds, and fish. Lemmings in the arctic are their main food source. When lemming populations drop, adult pairs of snowy owls may not lay any eggs until the populations rebound. Unlike other owls, snowy owls are most active during the day, especially in the summertime.
