The sounds of the American bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus) at Minnekhada Regional Park, British Columbia. Bullfrogs are native to eastern North America and are the largest true frog on the continent. They are found in every state east of the Mississippi and extend into Canada's maritime provinces. There are also a considerable number of areas that they have been introduced into, including numerous western states, southern British Columbia, South America, Western Europe, China, Japan, southeast Asia, and most of Mexico. When introduced into a new area, they become a problematic invasive species due to their voracious appetite, eating virtually anything that will fit into its mouth. They eat both invertebrates and vertebrates, including birds, mice, turtles, snakes, fish and other frogs - disrupting and endangering vulnerable species and ecosystems in the process. Once established, their numbers are difficult to control as they are very skittish and females lay one or two clutches per season with average clutch size of 12,000 eggs (but can reach up to 20,000 eggs!).

They are named for their baritone call, which is said to resemble that of a cow mooing. Males are smaller than the females and have a bright yellow throat during the breeding season.

Bullfrogs have been recorded attaining a size of 800 g (1.8 lb) and measuring up to 20 cm (8 in) from snout to vent. The tadpoles can measure up to 15 cm long!
