Design a Bench // Woodworking Design
I was hanging out in the shop and doodling and wanted to create my own design for a bench so I drew up a sketch and then transferred that to Sketchup. This video is the result of the proof of concept, the prototype bench. I admit the top did not turn out how I expected. I had sanded too aggressively and took parts of the first layer of plywood off but I still enjoyed how this turned out from a design perspective.
I would enjoy finding out what everyone thinks of this bench design. Comment below and let me know. What wood species would you like to see this done in? I basically used scrap wood for the legs.
I started out milling the legs on the jointer and planer to get a flat face, I then ripped the 6x6 into half and off camera, milled the smaller pieces. I admit that ripping that 6x6 was a little scary. I figured that if folks use dado stacks why could I not rip the 6x6 even though the blade would not be exposed. I think it worked out fine but my table saw is completely lacking horse power to get through some of the cuts I put up against it.
Once the legs were sanded and ready, I moved onto the bench top. I took a 3/4" piece of plywood and ripped it with the Makita Track saw and then laminated the two pieces together to create a thicker bench top. I was worried about clamping pressure in the middle but I found a heavy log to put there that worked out great. When the glue up was done, I cut the angles on the bench ends. The angles were cut at 22.5 degrees to create a 45 degree angle for the ends.
I used the biscuit joiner to join the ends while also creating cauls for clamping at that angle. I was able to attach the angled pieces successfully. This was something that I had never tried and I'm glad I was able to pull it off.
Once the bench top ends were glued and secure, I sanded the entire bench and then proceeded to add the legs. I created a blind mortise for the legs to ensure more stability and the bench is rock solid so I'm glad a did this. I used Kreg Screws to screw the legs onto the top while also creating a counter sink hole. I filled the hole with dowels and then flushed trimmed them afterwards. I like the look of the dowels on the bench top. I did one last sanding on the entire bench off camera, cleaned it up and then used the Minwax Spray Laquer - Satin as the finish. I applied 4 coats with 1 sanding between coats 2 and 3. They say that no sanding is needed but I find that on plywood the finish is smoother if you do at least 1 sand during the process.
