Prototype Shirt Organizer || How to Save Space
The T-Shirt organizer design all started when I got fed up with organizing all my t-shirts using hangers. Not only does it take up a lot of closet space, there are so many draw backs to hangers. I’m not a fan. Whether T-Shirts or button ups or sweaters or whatever, the weight of the piece of clothing weighs down and creates a stretch shoulder area. If you’ve experienced this before then you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. May seem silly to some people but that’s just the way I am. I’m creating my own comfortable and organized world so I get to decide how I change it!
Why don’t I use a dresser of draws, well, simple, wrinkles. 9 times out of 10 you’ll get wrinkled clothing using a dresser so I’ve not used them for years.
I started the project a few years ago, when I initially had the idea. What woodworker or anyone for that matter hasn’t started a project, completed a piece and then set it aside to finish later?….ha ha.. I built the rectangular base using pocket holes and it’s been sitting around for a while. I decided that it was time.
To continue the project I cut the panels that the shirts would lay on and then gave those a round over. I had to figure out how to allow them to move with a hinge. I took a thick dowel and decided to combine that with the panels to create the hinge. I attached those together and I had the dowels pinned to the sides of the base and this would create the movement that I was interested in producing to get the function i needed. I used smaller dowels as limit points for the hinge to stop both on the inside and the outside of the panels. I had to play around with hole spacing in order to produce the angle I needed for both panels to be symmetrical.
At this point the project was complete from a prototype perspective. The project can obviously be modified to use hardwood and I’d recommend if you were making this for yourself to use hardwood.
