Motivation and Leadership
What is the relationship between motivation and leadership? Why is motivation important in leadership? Self Determination theory has a lot to say about how great leaders motivate their teams.
In this video, I provide context by sharing the four-square model based on "motivation" and "ability" and I attempt to show how this view of human motivation is too simplistic. I contrast this view with the model of motivation and leadership set forth by Self Determination theory, or SDT. SDT suggests that there are three primary motivators or keys that leaders can leverage: competence, autonomy and relatedness.
By understanding what these principles mean and imply, a leader can develop simple but sound motivation strategies and begin to exhibit the leadership behaviors that inspire motivation.
