Baltimore oriole nest
Each spring they arrive in our neighborhood. Their calls among the louder ones that greet the day mixing with the songs of cardinals and robins.
The Baltimore oriole stands out in the forest. The male's bright orange body contrasts nicely with its black wings. The attraction is my neighbor's feeders. In addition to seeds and nuts they put out slices of fruit and this is what draws the orioles in. Insects and fruit make up their diet although insects are what is fed to the chicks.
their nest reminds me of the nests of weaver birds that I see when I am on safari. Orioles do not nest in colonies like weaver birds do and finding an oriole nest is a challenge. It typically hangs from a tip of a branch. It is weaved from grasses and looks almost to flimsy a sack to hold a growing family. It was the hungry chirping of the young birds that drew my attention to the nest seen in the video.
