Alligator River NWR
On a recent trip south I was able to spend only one day in Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge (ARNWR). I'd heard it was a great place to see black bears but it proved to be so much more. It was mid-April and we were in North Carolina just inland from the Outer Islands. At first the bears were elusive (they are most visible at dawn and dusk) but there was much to keep us enthralled.
Enjoy the video. Please note that ARNWR is virtually the last stronghold of the endangered red wolf. Perhaps 10 roam across this large reserve. We did not see one. The footage of a captive one is included to help illustrate the importance of this place in conserving and protecting our wildlife.
Wildlife in the video are (in order of appearance): Barred owl, alligator, yellow-bellied slider, Prothonotary warbler, Carolina wren, marsh rabbit, red wolf, great blue heron, river otter and black bear. That is what we saw on the day we were there.
