White tailed Prairie Dogs HD 1080p
Most people likely don't know there is more than one type of prairie dog. In fact there are four species and none, not one, is a dog. They are ground squirrels of a type. Some like the black-tailed prairie dog (featured in other videos on this channel) are very gregarious and live in large colonies. They out-numbered the bison until ranchers and farmers declared war on them. They were very nearly exterminated in the United States and were pretty much wiped out in Canada. They re recovering in both countries today.
They were called "dogs" because their cry sounded like a yipping dog.
The species featured in this video is the white-tailed prairie dog. It lives in much smaller colonies and in much harsher, drier habitats than its more common cousin.
The other two are the Gunnison's prairie dog and the Utah prairie dog.
