The Head First Ladder Bail is a technique we teach all new recruits as a way to quickly exit from an upper floor room when conditions become untenable. This method teaches the firefighter to get his head and upper body out of the window onto the ladder. Once he stretches out headfirst on the ladder, the firefighter locks his arm around the second rung and pivots into an upright position, then slides down the ladder. This skill is an emergency procedure which requires practice many times before executing in a real situation.
