Vikram Sarabhai | Father of Indian Space
Dr. Vikram Sarabhai’s birth anniversary is celebrated annually on August 12. Born on August 12, 1919, in Ahmedabad to progressive industrialists, Sarabhai returned to India in 1947 after studying at Cambridge. At 28, he founded the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in Ahmedabad. Revered as the Father of the Indian Space Program, he launched the Indian Space Programme in 1960, leading to the establishment of ISRO on August 15, 1969. Under his guidance, the first Indian satellite, Aryabhata, was launched in 1975. Sarabhai also helped establish India’s first rocket launching station and collaborated with Dr. Homi Bhabha. Honored posthumously with the Padma Vibhushan (1972), his legacy endures through ISRO’s continued focus on space technology for societal benefits.
