Recently I have had the chance to ask some folks about their PC. If they had one? What system is it using? What do they do on or with the PC. Will it update to Win11? Have you heard that Windows may become a subscription service ? Have you heard of Linux?
Hard to get a read on folks if that is a 'deer caught in the headlights' look?
But some are genuinely interested in their options. I was and still am surprised at the number of folks that actually own a PC.
There's much much more to Linux than I can explain especially in one video or even 40.
So, for those of those that expressed interest I'll try to get you started on somewhat of the right track.
1: Selecting a "distro". Things to consider.
Considerations.
Ease of install, familiarity of DEs', documentation.
Many of the top distros can be installed using a GUI called Calamares installer, like the one in the video.. Some, have their own installers with many following the same install patterns.
Some distros are only available with different installers such as by command line, terminal user interface (tui) & some others.
Some will require an active internet connection. While others may provide most of what is needed to have a running install without the internet.

2: Download an .iso file through mirrors or torrent links and save it to your PC.

Download the SHA256 sums provided by Linux Mint
Download both sha256sum.txt and sha256sum.txt.gpg
Authenticity check:
to verify the authenticity of sha256sum.txt, check the signature of sha256sum.txt.gpg by following the steps below.
Import the Linux Mint signing key:
gpg --keyserver hkp://keyserver.ubuntu.com:80 --recv-key "27DE B156 44C6 B3CF 3BD7 D291 300F 846B A25B AE09"
gpg --verify sha256sum.txt.gpg sha256sum.txt
4: Burn image to USB drive. Different methods available in Windows, Linux & Bsds'.
GUIs:
Linux Mint - Mint stick (formats & burns)
Windows - balena-etcher, rufus.
Most Linux distros as well as flatpaks are available. Can use the command line.
Fedora media writer, isoimagewriter, Gnome-disk-utility and others.
4: Booting to the image disk. NOT COMPLETE BY NO MEANS
Lenovo F12 for boot menu
F1 for BIOS
HP esc key for menu
Dell F2 for BIOS
F12 for boot menu
5: Install the OS.
