Magic Squares are part of mathematics. They are termed recreational mathematics. Great mathematicians like Srinivasa Ramanujan, Leonhard Euler, etc have done extensive work in the field of magic squares.
Indians have done a lot of work in this field of magic square. Many people confuse magic square with sudoku. While Sudoku is just a logic based puzzle, magic square involves both logic and arithmetic.
Sudoku can be mathematically called as Latin squares and on which subject Euler had done extensive research.

What the westerners call as Lo shu square we call after our God Seetha, We call the Lo Shu square as sita Chakra.
Euler and many mathematicians wanted to construct a 8x8 magic square using the horse move method in chess. You all know that the knight's move in chess is in zig zag manner.
But they were not able to create a knight's move magic square without the knight anywhere jumping across.
But the knight's move is very much a fact in even or magic squares like 4x4, 8x8, 12x12 etc.
The knight moves disjointedly. If we wanted to plot a magic square where the knight ended in the same place as the starting point after 64 moves it does not result in a magic square. It becomes a travelling problem.
Srinivasa Ramanujan discovered the basic architecture or the structure of a 4x4 magic square. He said that there about six different peoperties that a 4x4 magic square displays. Once you know those formulas you can create a birthday Magic Square for you friend or family member. Apart from those 6 formulas there are also additional symmetry in the construction of a 4x4 magic square.
The most important property is the centre 2x2 giving the magic sum, If we are not able to create the centre 2x2 as a magical element we will not be able to construct a magic square of order 4x4.
