Trachtenberg system of speed mathematics.
Addition:
Trachtenberg aka Jakow Trachtenberg was a Russian Jew. He was born in Odessa, now in Russia in 1888. He lived up to 1953. Trachtenberg was a witness to two world wars.
During the first world war, he was appointed as a chief Engineer in a Russian arms factory. Some 11,000 men were under his supervision.
During the Russian revolution he fled to Weimar Republic in Germany and settled there.
Later when Hitler came to power, Trachtenber became critical of the Nazi policies.
Trachtenberg was then sent to a concentration camp.
The condition in the concentration camp was full of chaos and utter hopelessness. Amidst that background in order to keep his mind, he developed a mental system of Mathematics.
This is called the Trachtenberg system of speed mathematics.
Today we will see the method of addition that he has devised.
In this addition method
We never count above 11.
1. There is accuracy, speed.
2. This method is faster.
3. We can check each column independently.
When we reach 11 or above just make a tick mark besides the number and subtract the number with 11 and carry the calculation forward.
At the end write down the balance and the number of ticks one below the other.
While doing the final calculation add two zeroes as shown.
Add each column in L shape. Now you get the answer.
The students now a days fear mathematics. By following the method as enunciated by the Trachtenber the students would fall in love with the mathematics and start to oberse the world in a different color.
