A thyroid nodule is a lump that appears on the thyroid gland in the neck. It is a type of thyroid disease and represents a "different" lesion that radiologically differs from the surrounding thyroid parenchyma.
In most cases, this condition is harmless and not caused by a serious disease. However, when the lump begins to enlarge or the thyroid nodule interferes with thyroid hormone production, a number of symptoms can arise.
The purpose of evaluating a thyroid nodule is to determine whether it is malignant.
It is important to understand the history, physical examination, laboratory tests, and management algorithm for thyroid nodules.
