An honest atheist can destroy Christianity
Divine Hiddenness has been making the rounds on YouTube recently, and I wanted to share my thoughts as an atheist. In short, it seems to me that one of the most common responses to this argument paints the apologist into a corner they really don't want to be in, and commits them to a line of thinking that they would reject if anyone else dared to employ it.
To elaborate just a bit on my argument: I think it is very plausible (highly probable in fact) to say that there has been, at some point in the last 2,000 years, at least one honest Christian who genuinely wanted to know what is true, but who did not leave Christianity. Maybe this person just didn't have access to any other information, or maybe they were just too stupid to reason through the evidence: there are many ways a person can be genuinely searching for the truth, but fail to reach it, without the cause being emotional resistance. Likewise, I would say the same thing for non-Christians: surely there has been, in the last 2,000 years, at least one honest non-Christian who genuinely wanted to know what is true, but who did not become a Christian, even if it's simply because they never heard of Jesus, or simply because they were too stupid to understand Christianity.
Heck, InspiringPhilosophy loves his "Digital Physics" argument for God, but that argument requires a detailed understanding of quantum physics, so can IP really act surprised if some non-Christians genuinely don't get it despite their best efforts? I don't think so. If God really wanted everyone to know that he exists, and if the Digital Physics argument is one of the top-tier reasons to believe in God, then he would have given us better intuitions about quantum physics.
