Originally from Eritrea, Liya learned to cook at a young age from her mother. Growing up, she grew corn and Teff to make Injera (flatbread) for her family. These early cooking experiences helped her develop a passion for cooking. She later left her home country in fear of persecution and walked 2,500 miles through Sudan, Egypt, and the Sinai Peninsula until she reached Israel. After living in Israel for 7 years, she was resettled in the U.S. with her son in 2017.
In celebration of World Refugee Day 2020, Liya will be teaching us all about making Alicha, an Eritrean staple dish, the Eritrean culture, and her life stories as an asylum-seeker in Israel and a refugee in Florida.
On Saturday, June 20, Liya will be making Alicha, an Eritrean staple dish. Her workshop will be premiered on Saturday, June 20 at 1 pm Eastern Time on YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram. Following the live premiere, we will have a live conversation with Liya from 2 pm ET, via Zoom and live-streamed on our Facebook and Instagram.
To join the conversation following the workshop, please RSVP online to reserve your spot: heartytables.eventbrite.com
