Lightplay E2 Doing a photoshoot with the x100 Original
Hey everyone, I hope you're well. For this week's episode I decided to try a few different things. First, instead of it being a journals episode, I created a lightplay episode. This is what I'll be calling an episode where I do a photoshoot. Ultimately, that's what a photoshoot is for me, playing with light. In today's video I do a shoot with the Original x100 and I play with shooting in direct light, though we kept shooting even after the sun went down. Secondly, I tried a different pace with the video. With it being the first one, i'm sure there will be some room for refinement in regards to this format which I'll implement for effectively in future episodes within this series. In regards to this video specifically, the photoshoot in today's episode took place back in October of 2019 when I first got the original X100. I don't really talk a lot about it in the video, mainly because I don't want this to be a gear driven channel, but gear is important at some point in the near future I'll do a video on just the x100 legacy (as i like to call it) where I go over my impressions of it and what I love about it as well as how it's "limitations" have made me grow as a photographer. For now just keep in mind that when we did this shoot, I was really struggling with the colors. I edited these files using a trial version of Capture One so I was working with new type of files, a new editing software and I was pushing the cameras sensor in regards to it's dynamic range. It was a fun experience and I loved the Challenge. Also another thing I'd like to mention regarding today's shoot that I didn't mention in the video was the contrast in mood between the broll of Karla versus the actual photos. It's not uncommon for someone to say that they find my photos to be darkly romantic, or even sad and tragic. I have a friend who asked me once (Half joking I think) if all of my models are depressed... In today's video I decided to show both realities. Usually there's a lot of lightness on the actual shoot but the photos tend to come out more dramatic or serious. I think that's more to do with how i feel in my soul versus the model. Or maybe, and probably more than likely, it's a collaboration of us both. I hope you enjoyed this week's episode. I'm gonna put the amazon affiliate link to some of the x100's below but keep in mind that you can probably get these cameras used for a lot cheaper if your willing to take the risk. I bought my Original x100 for a little under $300 on ebay. By the time I paid taxes it was a dollar or two over $300. The aperture wheel would stick a bit and the signs of wear and tear are definitely present. But I don't mind those types of things, with some constant use, the aperture wheel now clicks and moves the way it should. Also, because it is an old camera, the technology is more laggy than most modern cameras. The autofocus is much slower than any other camera I own but in my opinion it's still good enough for pretty much all of the things I use it for. That's my opinion and my experience, i tend to slow down and be more methodical vs shooting in burst mode. If you're a burst mode shooter than perhaps this isn't for you. In addition, at F2 the camera won't shoot above 1/1000 of a second. So in those types of situations it would overexpose and I thought that maybe my camera was broken but in reality Fuji limits the leaf shutter to 1/1000 at f2 because it's not good for the longevity of the shutter. This camera has no electronic shutter to compensate for situations like that but it does have a built in nd filter which is amazing! I use that ND filter pretty much anytime I shoot outdoors and I had it on the entire time I did this shoot. The camera is small and light and I'll cove all of this and more when I do my combo's episode on this camera.
