Two small moments but I wanted to document this and make it permanent so people can see that even if it’s 2024 and we would assume people should “know” by now- nope. I’ve also been denied to board on a plane in Japan because I am Deaf. This is why constant educating, exposure, and awareness is important. Being denied entry to something just because of one’s Deafness and Disability is common global wide regardless of country. And so.. the fight continues…

“Incident one:
Denied entry to the leaning tower of Pisa because I am DEAF.
Requirement: hearing person must accompany me.
Renca is going up the stairs inside the Pisa and she is signing at the same time.
Ok so I went to the ticket office. I told them I’m deaf and they were like ohhh dear - no you can’t go up. You must have a hearing person accompany you. I told them I don’t need one and they said no you must. I told them I’m just going to walk up the stairs and they still said no. I told them I’m traveling alone. They said sorry. Then the guy said well maybe you can find someone random to accompany you. I was like ok fine- I will. Next to me was a couple - see here.
Photo of the three of us together. Text reads that the leaning tower of Pisa- checked! Thanks for the UK couple who was willing to go with me after I randomly picked them.

Incident two:
Denied entry to the tower of Santa Maria Basilica because I am DEAF. Requirement: a hearing person must accompany me.
Renca is wearing a black cap and a scarf. She is signing in front of the basilica.
See this? That’s the basilica - for church. I was curious to enter and they had a tower and they said no I can’t enter the tower. I have to go with someone (hearing person). This time no one was around me so I couldn’t randomly ask someone. I was the only one there. So I just let it go and left. They did explain to me why I couldn’t go up- they said how can I hear if someone speaks to me and if there’s an emergency- how do I hear. Well if the tower is going down I don’t think any hearing person will even help me at all. We re all going down together. All of us.
