Some $2,000 / lb eels and a ~$10/lb eel...same species
Here’s two clips of the biggest and smallest American Eels I’ve ever seen–both from this year. The juveniles go for thousands of dollars per pound live, and the adults go for less than 1% of what the juveniles command in market.
Would a 70lb striper eat this jumbo for dinner? I’d bet so.
American eels can grow up to 6’ long & I’d estimate this adult to be 2.5-3 feet. Similar to cod, the average size was a lot bigger just a few centuries ago. They’re often confused with conger eels but can be distinguished from congers in a few ways. American eels have a bit of an underbite, congers don’t. American eels also have top & bottom fins very similar in length, while a conger’s top fin is significantly longer than its bottom fin.
