Greetings, everybody.

Today we’re testing Death Stranding, the PC version of the game made by Kojima Productions.

My current PC specs are as follows:

-CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 (stock settings) with Coolermaster Hyper 212 Black RGB (w/2 fans, push-pull).
-Mobo: MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC.
-GPU: Inno3D Twin X2 GTX 1070 (stock) and WHQL driver 451.67.
-RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport LT (2x8GB) CL16 DDR4@3200 Mhz.
-Storage: PNY XLR8 CS3030 1TB NVMe (O.S. & game), Samsung 750 EVO 500 GB.
-Case: Fractal Design Meshify S2 (Intake: 2x140 Front, 1x120 Lower Front - Exhaust: 1x140 Rear, 1x120 Top/VRM Area)
-PSU: Corsair RMx 650W 80+ Gold.
-O.S: Windows 10 Pro 64bit. (1909 build)
-Monitor: AOC AGON AG251FG 1080p-240Hz.

Firstly, let me say that it’s clear the developers have put a lot of effort into making this version the absolute best version there is, and possibly ever will, considering all of the customization settings we can find especially for the Controls/Gamepad/Keybinds department. The settings for changing all the different sensitivities and stuff have been separated into their own sections, both for the gamepad and the mouse and keyboard.

I was afraid this could’ve potentially be another one of those console ports with mediocre PC keybind settings, but I’m glad my fears were just that, nothing more. There are still a couple quirks with some reserved keys, like DEL or Enter, but for the most part I am completely able to make my own left handed keybind setup for this game, so if definitely gets my golden “lefty” seal of approval and…that sounds quite dumb TBHs, but yeah it’s quite left handed friendly :P

For Graphics Settings we have 4 presets: Low, Med, Default and Very High. Default are the equivalent to console settings, no less, and they look pretty decent at 60+ FPS, that’s for sure. Most of the options don’t scale too well when going from max to the lowest setting, apart from: Model detail, Shadows, AO and of course Resolution, and this game only lets me use either 720p or 1080p native, no DSR downsampling as the “Fullscreen” mode here is merely borderless. There’s no resolution scale modifier either so I wasn’t able to test higher resolutions, that’s how it is.

The in game cinematics are mostly run in engine, oddly enough sometimes my GTX 1070 isn’t being maxxed out there, around 80’ish percent usage, and the CPU usage is quite average, nothing too high either. The game runs quite smooth and fine for the most part, in any case, except in the initial cinematic where somehow it stuttered a couple times, not sure why.

Since it’s borderless mode, the in game vsync seemed to make the frame-rate limit in game not work properly for 60 FPS, but disabling vsync fixed this.

This game offers Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling 2.0 for those running RTX GPUs, in which case you should, and have to use it, because it’ll look better than native resolution, and also offers AMD’s Fidelity Contrast Adaptive Sharpening Upscaling, which for 1080p native doesn’t do much apart from surely increasing the FPS at the cost of a more blurry image, even after using 50% Sharpening, so I prefer not using CAS, just as I do in the other games that include it, for me it’s not worth it, and only those running 1440p or 4K screens might see a real benefit from it.

All in all, this is a great version of the game, runs well, controls are very tight and good when using mouse and keyboard, and very customizable too.

Some useful timestamps:

[MENUS & SETTINGS]
00:00 - Intro and general menus (Audio, UI, etc.)
03:45 - Control Settings (Gamepad)
08:36 - Keybinds remap menu
12:47 - Graphics Settings

[IN GAME]
15:33 - Initial in engine cinematic (Very High settings)
17:49 - Brief look at Low settings
18:44 - Medium Settings
19:19 - Default Settings (Console equivalent)
20:03 - Very High
20:51 - Another piece of cinematic (Very High)
23:22 - Yet another cinematic (more open area)
24:07 - Shadow Quality analysis (Low-Medium-High)
25:32 - BUG: Low shadows get "stuck", switch to Medium to fix
26:34 - Ambient Occlusion
27:38 - Screen Space Reflections
28:33 - [1080p]FidelityFX CAS Upscaling with Sharpening
31:48 - FidelityFX OFF vs ON, don't squint too much...
32:11 - [720p]FidelityFX isn't worth it at lower resolutions
34:21 - FPS limiter in game issues (disable in game Vsync)
36:57 - Model Detail (LOD distance)
39:45 - More Screen Space Reflections

Kojima Productions deliver once more on the PC a great version of one of their games, just like they did in the past with MGS V, they always manage to make their games run great on the PC and also looking quite decently.

As usual, I hope this can be useful to any of you, and I’ll see you in the next one : )
