In this Engaging 4 MO webinar, Dr. Rui Yao, personal financial planning professor, speaks about how personal characteristics affect financial decision-making. She explained results from a 1992 to 2012 health and retirement study that looked into how couples assign financial decision-making authority.

Financial decision makers tend have certain personality characteristics such as conscientiousness, emotional stability and openness, and they tend to be less extroverted and agreeable. Dr. Yao also explained how cognitive abilities related to numeracy and memory affect financial decision-making. She further discussed how choosing an inappropriate financial decision maker creates a wealth penalty.
