In 1972 Patti Smith published her first book of Poetry : Seventh Heaven . Her publisher was Telegraph Books and the slim volume cost $2.45 . A first time poet , she had to give away copies for free to the various vamps + tramps that hung about The Chelsea Hotel in New York City where she was staying .
Her inspiration included William Burroughs , and other beat poets including Allen Ginsberg , Gregory Corso . She was also a fan of Sylvia Plath and Jean Genet . As well as William Blake , Charles Baudelaire and Arthur Rimbaud .
