It was written years earlier ... at a time when her husband - Fred Sonic Smith - was still alive and they were living with their 2 children in an old stone house just outside Detroit .
Feeling she was descended from a long line of shepherds , she re-visits some of her early childhood memories ....
including what inspired the song that featured in her first record Horses : Kimberly , the babe in her arms as the black barn burns ...
