In this video, Sandi Smith, PT, a pelvic health therapist at Ability Rehabilitation, explains what Pubic Symphysis Disorder is, what causes it, and how to gain relief from the symptoms involved with this condition.
During pregnancy, the hormone relaxin is released to help prepare the body for childbirth by softening the ligaments and joints in the pelvis. This increased mobility can sometimes lead to excessive movement or instability of the pubic symphysis joint, causing PSD.
Treatment for PSD may vary depending on the severity of the condition, but generally includes a combination of physical therapy, pain management, and supportive measures such as pelvic support belts.
Physical therapy may include exercises to strengthen the pelvic muscles and improve joint stability, as well as manual therapy techniques to help realign the joint and reduce pain.
