Rachel Colman, OTR/L, of Ability Rehabilitation explains what Occupational Therapy is.

Occupational therapy in the setting of Ability Rehabilitation focuses on the upper extremities. Occupation refers to anything that occupies your time so things such as eating, brushing your teeth, walking your dog and gardening are all occupations. An Occupational Therapist's job is to help patients do these types of tasks after surgery or injury without weakness and pain.

A seemingly simple task such as eating is actually complex in regards to the motions required by multiple bones and joints that are involved. An occupational therapist's job is to break the task into smaller more manageable movements, and do exercises to build strength to help their patient return to these regular daily activities without discomfort.
