Even a cursory glance at the boat in the foreground of this scene, tells us that its days of going out to sea have long gone.
However, it’s this rustic, weathered look, and depiction of decay that appealed to me about this little scene set on the north east coast of England.
There are plenty of interesting watercolour lessons contained in this subject.
There’s the boat detail rendered with fine point brushes, contrasted with large wet into wet, broad brush areas. Also some important dry-brush work, and effective use of shadows to glue it all together.
A really fun little painting to get to grips with.
