V60 POUR OVER COFFEE Technique : The Reverse Mullet
This is Rob's personal method for getting a consistent, forgiving, and sweet cup of coffee from the V60.
A mullet primer first, just for the uninitiated: it’s a hairstyle that’s referred to as “business in the front, party in the back”.
This V60 recipe is specifically designed to wreck channeling issues up front while allowing for gravity to do most of the work in the middle and end of the brew.
So, it’s a bit of a rock and roll party up front - lots of agitation, lots of big pours, getting things really hot. A water and coffee mosh pit, of sorts. Then it’s slow, steady, and consistent at the back end. A polite symphony audience, or a kind of boring business meeting.
The goal: a well-extracted cup that has little channeling, high clarity, and is a great representation of the inherent beauty of the coffee you are drinking. Admittedly, the brew takes some patience. After the rocking and rolling, it’s one long, steady, smooth pour from there. But the results make it worth it!
