The redesign of the Lexus GX, the brand's mid-size off-road SUV, has been delayed, and it's finally here for the 2024 model year. Riding on an all-new platform with an updated powertrain and many more modern features, the new GX550's rugged looks are the only thing connecting it to its outdated predecessor. The new model's boxy, Land Cruiser-inspired exterior looks like it'll age well—a good thing, since the GX has a history of long product cycles. The 2024 GX550 uses the same body-on-frame platform as the Toyota Sequoia and Toyota Tundra and will be offered with a twin-turbo V-6 powertrain (hybrid-assisted and hybrid-assisted) instead of the Toyota Sequoia's V-8. outgoing model. It falls into the Lexus SUV lineup between the flagship LX luxury SUV and the TX SUV, which is similar in size but focuses more on interior space and on-road comfort.

GX is one of Lexus' oldest nameplates and is appreciated by off-road enthusiasts, so Lexus is smart enough to continue offering it in a range of off-road combat trims. We expect to see the GX550 in Lexus showrooms in early 2024.

A twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 engine is standard on the GX550. Its 349-horsepower blown-up V-6 produces more power than the previous-generation GX's V-8. A 10-speed automatic is also standard, and all models are all-wheel drive. Overtrail and Overtrail+ trims are equipped with more off-road features than standard equipment, such as 18-inch wheels with 33-inch All-Terrain tires, aluminum skid plate, adaptive suspension system with more wheel joints, crawl control, etc. feature and selectable driving modes for different terrains. Performance on the road is very high and the GX550 feels powerful off the line.

The ride is firm, especially on the available upgraded wheels. Steering is crisp and the GX's handling is appropriate for a tall, boxy SUV, but it's off-road where the Lexus really shines. Outside visibility is excellent, which is especially useful when navigating narrow roads. We had the chance to try the advanced off-road technology of the Overtrail model and we were very impressed. The transfer case allows the driver to select low-range gearing without locking the center differential, allowing for a tighter turning radius, and the Electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (E-KDSS) can independently disconnect the front or rear anti-roll bars. each other to help increase stability and reduce headbutt.

Despite the GX's solid exterior design, luxurious environments await you inside. Faux or genuine leather upholstery is available in a variety of colours, and Overtrail variants offer faux suede accents in dark green. Premium and Luxury trims offer three rows of seating with room for up to seven people, with a standard second-row bench; A pair of captain's chairs is optional and reduces seating capacity to six. Overtrail models are strictly two-row affairs with seating for up to five. The GX's third row offers the option of power controls. A refrigerated storage box, head-up display and digital key fob are available as optional extras.

All GX models come with a 14.0-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a separate 12.3-inch digital instrument display that can be reconfigured to display a variety of information to the driver. Most models have six USB-C ports on the inside, but the Overtrail and Overtrail+ models have only four USB-C ports; wireless smartphone charging pad is optional. A 10-speaker stereo is standard, but audiophiles can upgrade to a 21-speaker Mark Levinson surround-sound system.
