Gypsy Rose Blanchard: Tale of a Devouring Mother
The case of Gypsy Rose Blanchard, a young woman that convinced her boyfriend to kill her mother, went viral back in 2015. However, things weren't as it seemed: For years, her mother subjected Gypsy to hundreds of medical procedures that resulted to be unnecessary. In reality, Gypsy was a completely healthy child whose mother fabricated her illness. In Munchausen syndrome, individuals make up their own disease, whereas in Munchausen by proxy, they fabricate somebody else's disease. How does such a syndrome come to be psychologically? Looking at such cases closer, we discover a strange, narcissistic desire for recognition that manifests through an emulation of a relationship with a physician. But why the physician?
