Michelin Chef Magic in Slovenia
Welcome to Adventures with Sarah! Most of my favorite meals on tours are not at Michelin rated or styled restaurants. But that doesn’t stop me from starting our Harvest Tour at Zemono, a one star Michelin restaurant just a stone’s throw away from our lodgings, which is tucked inside a forest in Slovenia’s finest micro wine region of Vipava Valley.
The chef here is Tomaž Kavčič, who is a celebrity around Slovenia for his TV appearances and his children’s cookbook (my daughter has made a couple of recipes from it). Like many chefs at these types of restaurants he is creative and innovative and meals are a bit of a surprise. The meals themselves are delicious. I met him 13 years ago through a wine maker friend and he always is happy to see me even if I’m here just once a year. But what I love about him, other than his relentless enthusiasm, is he’s very visible the whole meal. Whether coming out to chat with guests or help his staff plate dishes and pull off little stunts like this to put an exclamation point on the restaurant’s signature dessert, a variation on gin and tonic made with citrusy sorbet surrounded by gin-tonic flavored gelatine.
