Simple explanation of a testicular hydrocoele. Hydrocele is a relatively common cause of scrotal swelling. It usually happens only on one side but can at times be present on both sides. Hydrocoele can happen in any age and is rather common in many new born boys. Most of these will resolve within a year after birth. If they persist after the age of 12 months than it is most possible due to presence of a simultaneous inguinal hernia. These ones will require an operation. Adult hydrocoele , if small and not causing many symptoms can be left alone and does not require any treatment. Vast majority of hydrocoeles are benign but some can be related to testicular cancer. Hence they should not be ignored and medical opinion should be sought. An ultrasound scan can easily confirm if the testes is normal or not. All these conditions can also cause scrotal swellings and are more serious than a simple hydrocoele.
