Hannah was a Hebrew woman married to Elkanah and they lived in the mountains of Ephraim. She was his first wife. He was also married to Peninnah. Peninnah had children but Hannah was barren.
Hannah became an example of how to pray. Hannah wasn’t praying for her own selfish reasons. She was willing to bless the Lord for blessing her. Hannah made a heartfelt vow to the Lord that if He would give her a child, she would raise him as a Nazarite and give that child back to God all the days of his life.
Hannah named her son Samuel which has been translated as “the name of God”, “Heard of God”, “Asked of God”, or “His Name is God”.
Hannah reached the place where she wanted a child so desperately, she was willing to give the child back to God. Hannah was a chosen vessel. God needed a woman willing to give the child to be raised in the temple. The child needed to know the ways of God from an early age. As a child God began to talk to Samuel.
