Deborah was the fourth judge of Israel. She is the only female listed as any type of leader for Israel after Miriam. Just because she is the only one listed in the Bible doesn’t mean she was the only one ever. The Bible leaves out a lot of people’s names and stories. Like Miriam, she is known for leading the people in song. The song she wrote in Judges 5 is counted among the greatest songs of the Bible. God told Deborah when to go to battle and who to fight. Deborah was not a warrior who led men herself. At least we are not told that she was or that she carried any type of weapon. She was more the counsel with God’s ear to tell the warriors when God said to attack.
When we first hear of Deborah, she is already a judge who sits under a palm tree to pronounce judgment on the children of Israel.
Judges 4:4-5 (NKJV) 4 Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, was judging Israel at that time. 5 And she would sit under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the mountains of Ephraim. And the children of Israel came up to her for judgment.
allowed a woman to have authority or that God used her as a conduit for His messages to His people. Never limit God. He can use whoever He wants, whenever He wants, and God is no respecter of persons. Remember also God’s warning of “touch not mine anointed”.
