About the song
============================
"Ripples" is a ballad by Genesis, released in 1976 on their album "A Trick of the Tail" and written by Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford. It is the longest track on the album and was a regular part of the concerts. The melancholy lyrics are about the fading of beauty that comes with ageing and the waves in the chorus are a symbol of this fading. In the album's graphics, each song was assigned a drawing, which are collected on the album cover. For this song, it is the drawing on the far left, in which an old woman looks at her youthful reflection in the mirror. The ballad begins with the line "Blue girls come in every size". Mike Rutherford said this was "another term for schoolgirls in blue uniforms". The line about a "face that launches a thousand ships" is a quote from "The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus" by Christopher Marlowe. On the genesis of the rest of the lyrics, he continued: "I ended up writing these really obscene lyrics for 'Ripples' and singing them until I wrote the final version."
.
One critic had this to say about the song: "Although much of 'A Trick Of The Tail' retains the mystical prog-rock style that Peter Gabriel established with Genesis, on other tracks the group pushes their sound in a more direct, less fantastical direction. The best example of this tendency is 'Ripples', an epic ballad about the rigors of aging. The lyrics alternate between verses lamenting the fading of beauty that comes with ageing (The face that launched a thousand ships, is sinking fast, that happens, you know), and a chorus that uses the metaphor of ripples disappearing across a pond for the ageing process: Sail away, away ... Ripples never come back. This song remains a cult piece among fans to this day because it is a mixture of overly sentimental sentiment and artful musicality. The heartfelt lyrics paved the way for later Genesis hits such as 'Your Own Special Way' and 'Follow You Follow Me'."

Lyrics
============================
Bluegirls come in every size
Some are wise and some otherwise
They got pretty blue eyes
For an hour a man may change
For an hour her face looks strange
Looks strange, looks strange
Marching to the promised land
Where the honey flows and takes you by the hand
Pulls you down on your knees
While you're down a pool appears
The face in the water looks up
And she shakes her head as if to say
That it's the last time you'll look like today
Sail away, away
Ripples never come back
Gone to the other side
Sail away, away
The face that launched a thousand ships
Is sinking fast, that happens you know
The water gets below
Seems not very long ago
Lovelier she was than any that I know
Angels never know it's time
To close the book and gracefully decline
The song has found a tale
My, what a jealous pool is she
The face in the water looks up
She shakes her head as if to say
That the bluegirls have all gone away
Sail away, away
Ripples never come back
They've gone to the other side
Look into the pool
Ripples never come back
Dive to the bottom and go to the top
To see where they have gone
Oh, they've gone to the other side
Sail away, away
Ripples never come back
Gone to the other side
Look into the pool
The ripples never come back, come back
Dive to the bottom and go to the top
To see where they have gone
They've gone to the other side
Ripples never come back
Sail away, away
