About the song

"Kashmir" is featured on the sixth studio album "Physical Graffiti" (1975) and was written by Jimmy Page and Robert Plant with contributions from John Bonham over a period of three years with lyrics dating to 1973. "It would be great if people thought of 'Kashmir' when they heard the name Led Zeppelin - and not 'Stairway To Heaven'." The sentence comes from Robert Plant, more than three decades after the release of the song that marks the end of the "Physical Graffiti" double album. "Kashmir" is not exaggerated or even hysterical. The track perfectly captures the essence of the band. Indeed it does. But although Led Zeppelin have captured some truly magical moments on record over the course of their career, "Kashmir" is undoubtedly one of the most outstanding tracks in the band's history. The track plays in the same league as "Whole Lotta Love" and "Stairway To Heaven". In other words: it is a classic, not only in the rock genre, but in the entire field of popular music.

So it's no wonder that even today, decades later, Robert Plant still says with conviction that "Kashmir" is Led Zeppelin's best track. And Jimmy Page is of the same opinion, even if he puts it a little more cautiously: "The track is definitely one of the best moments we had with Led Zeppelin." At the time, "Kashmir" was particularly important to Robert Plant. He wanted to show it to all the critics who had tried to keep Led Zeppelin down with jibes and ridicule since the beginning of their career. Such an epic, stylistically wide-ranging track gave him the opportunity to prove to the naysayers that his band was destined for greatness. For him, "Kashmir" was the crown jewel of "Physical Graffiti", a record in which the band was all about expanding their stylistic boundaries in all directions - it is not without reason that the double album contains both the longest and the shortest song in Led Zeppelin's history.
